The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has announced that this year’s International Day of Families will be celebrated on July 31st under the theme “The Impact of Urbanisation on Families in Uganda.”

Speaking to journalists in Kampala, the Minister of State for Cultural Affairs, Hon. Peace Regis Mutuuzo, said the rapid growth of urban areas is placing a significant strain on families across the country.

“Uganda now has 11 cities, 31 municipalities, and 583 small towns, but with this expansion, families are struggling with high living costs, poor access to clean water, and rising unemployment,” she said.

She added that family breakdown is becoming more common, particularly in urban settings, and highlighted the need for targeted interventions.

The minister noted that with 78% of the population under the age of 35, government efforts are now focused on equipping young families with tools for stability.

“We are working to ensure that families are supported with affordable housing, access to parenting education, and awareness about child protection laws,” she said.

She also raised concern over the increasing number of street children in urban areas, stating that, “Investigations into child trafficking are still ongoing and we are committed to finding lasting solutions.”

Mutuuzo welcomed the growing number of men reporting cases of gender-based violence, calling it a step forward in tackling domestic abuse.

“The law is there to protect everyone, and we are glad that men are also starting to speak up,” she remarked.

She concluded by calling on Ugandans not to abandon their cultural values in the face of rapid urban development.

This year’s celebration will take place at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, a shift from the usual July 15th date, intended to allow for broader participation and national engagement.
