A medical intern working at Luweero General Hospital has been arrested for asking for a bribe from a patient’s family during a childbirth operation.

The incident happened on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, when Julius Kakooza, a man from Galikwoleka village in Kamira Sub-county, took his wife to the hospital for a C-section (Caesarean section) delivery.

According to the police, the intern asked Kakooza to pay Shs250,000 before his wife could be taken to the operating room. Kakooza had already bought all the items needed for the delivery, but the intern still demanded the extra money as a "thank you" for the doctors.

Since Kakooza could not afford the bribe, he decided to seek help. He reported the matter to Ground Patriotic Checkers, a local group that fights corruption. The group’s leader, Salim Ssemanda, gave Kakooza the money and worked with police to catch the intern.

Police set up a trap. Kakooza handed the money to the intern as requested. Right after the exchange, police officers stepped in and arrested the intern on the spot. The Shs250,000 was taken as evidence.

ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the police spokesperson for the Savannah Region, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing. Police are also recording statements from hospital staff and witnesses.

Dr. Bruno Oyik, the head of Luweero General Hospital, confirmed that the intern had been working in the maternity ward for the past eight months. He said this is the first time the intern has been caught in such a case but warned that more people could be involved.

“This is a serious issue,” Dr. Oyik said. “We want our hospital to be a safe place where patients can get care without paying bribes.”

Police have promised to deal with any form of corruption, especially in hospitals where people go for life-saving services.

The arrested intern remains in police custody as investigations continue
