Supervisors checking students ahead before UNEB exams

The police in Mubende district have arrested a 36-year-old man, Leonard Elungat, for allegedly impersonating another candidate during the ongoing Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) exams.

According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, Elungat, a former student of Mubende Army senior secondary school who was suspended in senior three last year, was found sitting for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) Agriculture Paper One exam on Tuesday this week using another student’s index number.

Kawala said Elungat was impersonating Justus Atuhaire, a registered candidate at the same school who had not registered for Agriculture and was absent at the time of the exam.

Preliminary investigations show that Elungat had already sat for seven papers using Atuhaire’s index number before he was detected. The school’s headteacher reportedly caught him in the act and handed him over to the deputy headteacher for questioning, but Elungat managed to escape during interrogation.

He was later arrested on Wednesday, October 29, after being spotted in Mubende town. Police say Elungat is currently detained at Mubende Central police station and will be charged with impersonation and forgery once investigations are complete.

Uneb has repeatedly warned against impersonation and malpractice during national examinations, saying offenders, including school administrator,s will face prosecution under the UNEB Act, 2021, which prescribes penalties of up to five years in prison or fines for those found guilty.
