Gunmen Attack Kasese Barracks, Bundibugyo.
Ugandan security forces are investigating an overnight attack on a police barracks in Kasese District after unidentified gunmen opened fire and set a police house ablaze, prompting authorities to warn residents to remain indoors.
The assault, which occurred around midnight, left part of the barracks compound damaged as residents were awakened by heavy gunfire.
Police said the identity of the attackers has not yet been established but investigations are underway.
“We can confirm an incident occurred at our barracks in Kasese. Investigations are ongoing, and a detailed statement will be issued shortly,†a senior police spokesperson said on Saturday morning.
Authorities have heightened security across the district and deployed joint police and military patrols.
By dawn, heavy gunfire was also reported in Bundibugyo District, about 80 kilometers away, where security officers exchanged fire with armed men believed to have crossed from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“We have reinforced our units and are engaging the threat,†a security officer told ChimpReports.
The incidents have reignited fears of renewed instability along Uganda’s western frontier, which has in the past suffered attacks attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a militia operating from eastern DRC.
