The fourth series of The Witcher has arrived on Netflix, with much fanfare and anticipation, as Liam Hemsworth takes over the iconic role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill.

The eight-part series was released all at once, a departure from the streaming giant's usual practice of releasing series in parts. This marks the penultimate series, with a final fifth instalment set to conclude the adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's saga.

Throughout the new series, viewers will witness key characters separated and struggling to reunite. Ciri of Cintra (played by Freya Allan) chooses to go by the name Falka as she travels with an outlaw group known as The Rats, reports the Mirror.

Meanwhile, Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) is locked in battle against the villainous Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu). In the midst of this, Geralt is accompanied by an unlikely band of allies in his quest to find his Child of Surprise, while Ciri's father Emhyr var Emreis (Bart Edwards) is also on the hunt for her to fulfil Ithlinne's Prophecy and secure his lineage.

As the epic tale builds towards its final series, here are the main plot points from the season four finale.

How does The Witcher season 4 end?

Geralt.

Geralt journeyed with his group, often referred to as his hanza, which included high vampire Regis (Laurence Fishburne), bard Jaskier (Joey Batey), ex-soldier Cahir (Eamonn Farren), archer Milva (Meng'er Zhang) and dwarf Zoltan Chivay (Danny Woodburn). They were on a quest for Ciri and headed towards Nilfgard.

This followed the decision of dwarves Yarpen Zigrin and Percival to return to Mahakam and assist their kin. The remaining members of the party tried to use a ferry to cross the river Yaruga but found themselves in the midst of a fierce battle between Northern armies and Nilfgard soldiers.

The group are en route to consult some druids to help locate Ciri. Knowing their only option was to cross the bridge, they are compelled to fight their way through.

Meanwhile, although she initially saves the group, Milva is unable to complete the battle as she realises that she is having a miscarriage. Regis stays with her to aid her recovery.

For his role in the Battle of the Bridge, Queen Meve knights Geralt, and he officially becomes Geralt of Rivia.

Liam Hemsworth will have one more season of The Witcher

Yennefer.

Yennefer takes a pause from her pursuit of Vilgefortz to portal herself to Geralt. How she knew his exact location remains a mystery, as does how they managed to find a luxurious tent in which they spend the night together.

Following their dramatic reunion, she embarks on her own mission to confront Vilgefortz. In a conversation criticising the brotherhood for what seems like the umpteenth time, Yen finally proposes that her surviving friends should form their own group, a 'Lodge' of sorceresses.

Later, she hands over a dagger used to wound Vilgefortz to Triss, who utilises it to track him down, despite facing quite a swim to reach him. Before departing, Yen extracts a promise from Triss to restore Aretuza, with or without her assistance.

Vilgefortz.

Vilgefortz miraculously survived the clash between the mages and sorceresses at Montecalvo, but his army appears to be in ruins. He swiftly dispatches the only survivors and collects body parts from them, though his intentions remain unclear.

Who is Nimue?

We see Nimue and Stribog the storyteller once again after their introduction in the opening episode, although she is significantly older now. She reveals her plans to join the school at Aretuza and is eager to walk the same paths as Yennefer.

This character alludes to some key events in the book, albeit with significant alterations. Nimue is actually the name of the Lady of the Lake in Arthurian legend, which coincidentally is the title of the final book in the saga and will serve as the foundation for season five.

Nimue claims to feel a connection to Ciri, which aligns with the books. However, those familiar with the story will know she's not in the right place or time for that.

Ciri and the Rats.

Upon discovering that the Emperor is set to wed a counterfeit Ciri, the genuine one appears to decide on a dramatic comeback. However, she changes her mind when she learns her new mates are in immediate peril.

Leo Bonhart (Sharlto Copley) has laid a trap at an inn for the Rats, having tracked them with a hefty bounty on their heads.

Despite thinking they have the upper hand, Leo proves too formidable for the Rats. He quickly cuts them all down and Ciri arrives too late to save any of her friends, finding them all lifeless.

Even though she's clearly a skilled fighter by this point, Leo still manages to overpower Ciri and takes her captive. He forces her to watch as he beheads the Rats, preparing to turn them in for their bounties.

Earlier, Leo was contemplating a leaflet demanding Ciri's live return, which seems to be the only reason he keeps her bound, with her ultimate fate yet to be revealed.

Emperor Emhyr var Emreis.

Xarthisius informs Emhyr that there's a way to speed up the path to Ithlinne's prophecy, but it comes with risks. Already convinced he needs to eliminate Geralt, in the season's final moments, Emhyr is introduced to a creature that would assist him in doing just that.

The season concludes with this 'specimen' screeching and growling as Emhyr utters the most repeated word of the series - 'destiny', instructing this creature to find Geralt. Fans will be keen to identify this monster, as it doesn't seem to reference any part of the books.
