Police Arrest Three Suspected Panga-Wielding Thugs in Nsangi.
Nsangi Police Division has arrested three key suspects believed to be part of a notorious gang of panga-wielding thugs that has been terrorizing residents in the area.
The suspects have been identified as Niwagaba Shaban, Turinawe Eddie, and Kawakki Sulaiman. According to police, Niwagaba and Turinawe face charges of murder and aggravated robbery, while Kawakki has been charged with possession of suspected stolen property.
Speaking about the arrests, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the operation was carried out after several weeks of intelligence-led tracking.
“Our teams have been following up on this gang that has been attacking people using pangas, especially in the Nsangi area. The arrests of these suspects are a big step towards restoring peace in the community,” Onyango said.
He added that Kawakki allegedly acted as a dealer who bought and resold stolen phones, linking him to the wider criminal network.
“From Kawakki’s shop in downtown Kampala, we recovered several suspected stolen phones believed to have been taken during the robberies,” Onyango revealed.
Residents of Nsangi have in recent months raised concerns over increased cases of night robberies and violent attacks by thugs armed with pangas and other crude weapons.
Police believe the latest arrests could dismantle the gang that has been behind most of these incidents.
“We want to assure the public that investigations are ongoing and the suspects will face the full force of the law,” Onyango said, adding that the three are expected to appear in court next week.
The development has brought a sigh of relief to residents, who say they can now move freely without fear of attack.
