Ofwono Opondo Declared Unopposed MP for Older Persons
Government spokesperson and long-serving National Resistance Movement (NRM) member Ofwono Opondo has been declared unopposed as the Member of Parliament for Older Persons representing the Eastern Region.
This was after Opondo’s Democratic Party rival, Mpande Joram Kigenyi, conceded to a petition challenging his nomination.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Opondo said the decision followed a ruling by the Electoral Commission Tribunal chaired by Justice Simon Mugyenyi Byamukama.
The tribunal found that Kigenyi had committed forgery in his nomination documents.
“Today my opponent Mpande Joram Kigenyi–DP candidate conceded my petition at the @UgandaEC Tribunal chaired by Chairperson Justice Simon Mugyenyi Byamukama over forgery in nomination documents, and I was declared unopposed,” Opondo posted.
The decision effectively confirms Opondo as the NRM flagbearer and incoming representative for older persons in Eastern Uganda, a constituency that falls under the special interest groups category in Parliament.
This outcome reinforces the NRM’s dominance in special interest group representation, which includes older persons, workers, youth, and people with disabilities.
The declaration also marks another political milestone for Opondo, who is best known for his role as Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre and government spokesperson
