Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has publicly pledged to intervene in the payment dispute between comedian and fashion designer Sammy Kioko and the Machakos County Government. Kioko is allegedly owed a staggering Ksh19 million for an embroidery tender completed nearly two years ago.

Speaking during a phone interview on The Obinna Show Live, Sonko expressed his willingness to use his political connections to resolve the matter.

“How much is the county owing him? Does he have proof of delivery? Send him to me because the governor and I respect each other,” Sonko stated. “Let him come so that we can look for the governor and see how he can be helped. Maybe the county is broke… but even if it means paying him in instalments, I can help him.”

Kioko’s Emotional Toll

Sonko’s offer comes as a lifeline to Kioko, who broke down in tears during the same show, sharing the devastating toll the delayed payment has taken on his team and family.

Kioko revealed the non-payment has crippled his tailoring business, forcing him to close shop, lay off staff, and struggle to afford medical bills for his ailing sister.

“Why would we bother people with contributions for my sister’s treatment while others are sitting on our money?” Kioko pleaded emotionally. “Do they want a sick person to come in a wheelchair to ask for her money?”

He urged the county to stop “playing ego games” and at least communicate a payment plan, rather than accusing him of playing politics.

County Denies Allegations as “Politically Motivated”

The controversy gained traction after Kioko staged a peaceful protest outside Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s office. However, the Machakos County Government has firmly denied Kioko’s claims.

In a statement, the county dismissed the allegations as “unfounded” and part of a “calculated and politically motivated scheme aimed at discrediting the governor and undermining the integrity of the county’s leadership.”

In response, Kioko has countered by sharing screenshots and insisting he has receipts and evidence of delivery. A tailor who worked with Kioko on the project, named Maureen, also came forward to confirm the delivery of uniforms to the county, revealing that the delayed payment has left her unable to afford surgery for fibroids.

The high-profile dispute continues to spark widespread debate, drawing sympathy for the entrepreneur and calls for accountability from the county government.
