Egypt eliminated from U-17 World Cup after loss to Switzerland
The Young Pharaohs’ run at the FIFA U-17 World Cup came to an end as Egypt suffered a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32 in Qatar.
The Swiss opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Nevio Scherrer, with Ethan Bruchez adding a second just before halftime. Jill Stiel sealed the result with a third goal in the 58th minute, capping off a dominant display.
Egypt managed a consolation goal deep into stoppage time through substitute Anas Roshdy, but the outcome had long been settled by then.
The Young Pharaohs had advanced to the knockout stage as one of the eight best third-placed teams after finishing third in Group E with four points. Their group-stage journey included a 4–1 win over Haiti, a 1–1 draw with Venezuela, and a 3–0 loss to England.
Switzerland, who finished top of Group F with seven points, came into the tie unbeaten, having secured wins over Mexico and Ivory Coast, and drawn with South Korea.
The result ends Egypt’s hopes of reaching the quarterfinals in a tournament that had shown early promise.
