Police hunt for house guest who stole two-month-old baby in Butaleja
Butaleja, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Bukedi South Region have launched an urgent manhunt after a two-month-old baby girl was stolen from her home in Muhuyu Village, Busabi Sub-county on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
The case was officially reported on November 13 at Busabi Police Model Station by the baby’s grandfather, Bwire Paul, a 63-year-old peasant farmer. The baby’s mother, Namusabi Christine, 22, also resides at the home where the incident occurred.
According to police, the suspect is an unidentified female, estimated to be about 18 years old, who arrived at the home claiming to be a relative of Namusabi’s husband. The family welcomed her and allowed her to spend the night.
The following morning at around 9:00 AM, Bwire left for his garden while Namusabi went to the kitchen to prepare food for the guest. It was during this moment that the suspect reportedly entered the house where the infant lay sleeping, picked her up and fled.
Namusabi raised an alarm after discovering the child missing, prompting a frantic search by family and neighbours. However, no trace of the suspect or the baby has been found.
Police visited the scene and recorded statements from both Bwire and Namusabi. Investigations are ongoing.
Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson IP Mugwe J. Moses appealed to the public for assistance in tracing the suspect and recovering the child.
“We appeal to whoever has information leading to the identification or arrest of the suspect or recovery of the victim to share with any relevant stakeholder, civil authority, or nearby police,” Mugwe said in a statement dated November 14, 2025.
The case has been registered as Child Stealing under BTJ CRB: 345/2025 at Butaleja Police.
