One pupil dead, several hospitalised in suspected food poisoning incident in Luuka

The Territorial Police in Busoga North Region have launched a full investigation into a suspected food poisoning incident that has left a 10-year-old pupil dead and eight others hospitalised in Luuka District.

According to preliminary police findings, the incident occurred between 14th and 15th November 2025 at Telik Junior School after a Primary Two pupil reportedly shared food she had brought from home with several classmates.

Shortly after eating the food, the children began experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhoea, prompting teachers to rush them to Kiyunga Health Centre IV for emergency treatment.

Police confirmed that one of the pupils, Namugogo Sharifah, aged 10, died on November 15. Her body has been taken to Kiyunga Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the actual cause of death. The eight other affected pupils are still receiving medical care.

School Staff Arrested as Inquiries Deepen

Police have arrested two individuals connected to the school’s management to assist with ongoing investigations. Authorities believe their statements will be key in establishing responsibility and understanding how the incident unfolded.

Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Samson Lubega said specialised teams, including Scene of Crime Officers and medical experts, are conducting a thorough investigation.

“We call upon the public to remain calm as police specialists and medical personnel work to ascertain what substances may have caused the poisoning and under what circumstances the incident occurred,” Lubega said.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the food contained toxic substances or whether the poisoning may have been accidental. Detectives are analysing samples and interviewing witnesses, school staff and parents.

Authorities are expected to release more details after receiving medical and forensic reports.
