Karamoja Peace and Technology University Launch Opens a Bold New Chapter for the Region

Losilang in Kotido Municipality was filled with excitement and emotion as thousands witnessed the official launch of the Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPATU). For many residents, the moment felt historic—a long-awaited step toward healing, learning, and building a stronger, more peaceful Karamoja.

Former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, who represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, delivered a message that highlighted the government’s deep commitment to the new university. His attendance signaled just how important this institution is to the future of the region, inspiring confidence among community members and leaders alike.

KAPATU was created as an answer to the long-term challenges that have shaped life in Karamoja—cattle theft, hunger, limited access to education, and cycles of conflict. By offering training in peacebuilding, technology, human rights, and community development, the university hopes to empower youth with skills that can rebuild families, strengthen unity, and create meaningful opportunities.

Regional leaders expressed pride and hope during the celebration. Hon. Loki Peter Abrahams said the university would play a major role in bringing communities together and speeding up development. He encouraged government to increase support for free primary education so that children in the region can grow with strong academic foundations.

Kotido District Chairperson Lote Paul thanked President Museveni and international partners, especially the Ethiopian government, for helping turn the university dream into reality. He described KAPATU as a beacon of hope—one that will open doors for young people and help steer the region away from violence toward growth.

During the reading of the President’s message, Rt. Hon. Mbabazi confirmed that government will handle the university’s daily operational costs. He emphasized that education is the most effective path out of poverty and instability, and that KAPATU will become a vital anchor for progress in the region.

A touching part of the message came when President Museveni expressed willingness to forgive karachunas involved in cattle rustling. He encouraged them to take advantage of the university’s programs to change their lives, stressing that the goal is not punishment but rebuilding and giving youth a second chance.

As the ceremony ended, the air was filled with hope. Residents spoke of how the university would reduce the need to travel far for higher education, boost local business, and give young people real chances to succeed. With its launch, the Karamoja Peace and Technology University has become more than an institution—it has become a symbol of renewal and a powerful promise of a brighter future for the entire region.
