Kampala Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the decomposed body recovered from Musaale Swamp in Kyampisi Subcounty belongs to Aneza Merisa, a missing student of Naalya SS Lugazi Campus, and are now treating the case as murder.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ASP Rachael Kawala, the case began on November 6 when Aneza’s mother, Sarah Kamuganga, reported her missing at Wandegeya Police Station. Four days later, on November 10, a decomposing body dressed in a navy-blue skirt labelled “Nanyonga VII” was discovered in Musaale Swamp, Namulaba Village, under Nagalama Police Station jurisdiction.

Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the body was buried by mortuary attendants in Kayunga. However, as leads developed, detectives sought and secured a court order to exhume the remains for proper identification. DNA samples were extracted and submitted to the Forensics Headquarters in Naguru.

Kawala confirmed that the DNA results returned positive, conclusively linking the body to the missing 15-year-old student. “With this confirmation, we are now treating the case as a murder investigation,” she said.

She added that detectives are actively pursuing leads to determine how Aneza was killed and how her body was dumped in the swamp.

The body was handed over to the relatives for burial on Saturday.
