Police have defended their decision to block National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, from campaigning on Friday, saying he attempted to divert from an agreed-upon venue.

According to the official campaign programme, Kyagulanyi was scheduled to address rallies in Nwoya and Amuru districts. However, the candidate alleged that his team encountered what he described as “multiple blockades” orchestrated by security forces.

“In Nwoya, we were confronted by a group of youths wearing NRM T-shirts and holding placards with demeaning words,” Bobi Wine said. “Because of time, we could not proceed to our scheduled venue in Nwoya. We continued towards Elegu, only to find the road similarly barricaded by the regime police.”

He described the day’s events as “provocative tactics meant to break our resolve,” but insisted that he remains undeterred. As he was blocked at several points, crowds reportedly gathered to listen to his brief roadside messages.

Responding to the accusations, Aswa–West Regional Police Spokesperson David Mudong Ongom said the blockade was strictly due to Kyagulanyi’s failure to adhere to the agreed campaign route.

“The Territorial Police in the Aswa West Region today, 5th December 2025, blocked the NUP presidential candidate, Hon. Kyagulanyi, after he defied the venue designated for his campaign rally,” Ongom said. “He and his team abruptly attempted to divert and proceed to the Elegu border instead.”

He added that police halted the candidate’s movement and advised him to return to the venue earlier agreed upon with his organising committee and other stakeholders.
