Mengo: Kabaka’s Convoy Affected by Security Blockade Near Bulange
The convoy of the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, was on Monday affected by a heavy security blockade mounted near Bulange Mengo, as the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Police sealed off roads leading to the area.
The blockade was enforced ahead of a visit by the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who had been invited to Mengo by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga.
Security personnel closed and diverted several roads in and around Mengo, disrupting normal traffic and movements, including that of the Kabaka’s convoy—an incident that has since sparked public debate and political criticism.
Addressing supporters at Wankulukuku in Rubaga Division after his meeting with the Katikkiro, Bobi Wine strongly condemned the blockade, describing it as a clear act of impunity.
“Today, they did the worst. They blocked and diverted the Kabaka’s convoy because Kyagulanyi, a son of Buganda, was going to use the road. This is absolute impunity that has grown over time,” Bobi Wine said.
He added that such actions by security agencies demonstrate fear rather than authority.
“This does not show strength; it shows paranoia,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga expressed concern over the continued use of force by security agencies, particularly during opposition campaign activities.
“Violence breeds violence,” Mayiga warned.
He cautioned security forces against the use of bullets, tear gas, and batons during the election period, stressing that peaceful conduct is essential if Uganda is to have a calm and credible electoral process.
“If Uganda wants a peaceful election, these methods should not be used,” the Katikkiro said.
The incident comes amid heightened political tension as opposition candidates intensify their campaign activities across the country under heavy security deployment.
