KAMPALA: Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, said on Wednesday night that security forces blocked his movement and denied him access to accommodation in eastern Uganda, amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2026 general election.

In a statement, Kyagulanyi said soldiers and police first forced his team out of Amuria District, where they had booked accommodation to spend the night, before blocking them again at Otuchopi as they attempted to enter Soroti City to access alternative lodging.

“The military and police have once again blocked us, saying they cannot allow us to the alternative accommodation we had booked there,” Kyagulanyi said, adding that he was uncertain about the intentions of the security personnel.

He also renewed claims that President Yoweri Museveni’s government plans to harm him before polling day, allegations the government has previously denied.

Security agencies did not immediately comment on the claims.

In past incidents, police have said restrictions placed on opposition politicians are aimed at maintaining public order and preventing unrest.

The law enforcement body maintains Kyagulanyi continues to flout traffic guidelines, leading to disruption of business and movement of persons in urban areas during his campaign.

Kyagulanyi, a former musician and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has frequently accused security forces of harassment and intimidation during political engagements.

He challenged Museveni in the 2021 presidential election, which he says was marred by widespread irregularities.

The government has repeatedly dismissed allegations of assassination plots against opposition figures, saying the state has no interest in harming its political rivals.
