Police in Kampala arrested 70 men during a midnight operation targeting crime hot spots to improve safety during the festive season.
KAMPALA, Uganda — Police arrested 70 men during a midnight sweep of crime hot spots in the capital city early Saturday morning, according to authorities.
The operation, led by Central Police Station Kampala, targeted areas where individuals reportedly wait to ambush and rob pedestrians. Kampala Metropolitan Police officials said the crackdown is part of an ongoing initiative to improve public safety during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.
Preliminary investigations show that many of those detained were already wanted by various police stations for prior offenses. The suspects are being held at CPS Kampala and are expected to face charges in court.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy public relations officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the department remains committed to maintaining order. He said the public should expect similar operations to continue throughout the festive season to ensure a peaceful environment.
Security agencies urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious activity to police.
