Museveni Urges Lwengo Residents to Turn Peace into Prosperity Through Household Wealth Creation

At a campaign rally in Lwengo, President Yoweri Museveni posed a simple but pointed question to residents: what use is peace if it does not put food on the table? Standing before supporters on Friday, he challenged households to move beyond subsistence living and embrace income-generating activities as the surest path out of poverty.

Addressing an NRM campaign rally in the district, Museveni said Uganda’s four decades of stability have created the conditions for economic transformation, but warned that prosperity will only come through deliberate wealth creation at household level. He urged residents to use the peace achieved under the National Resistance Movement to actively engage in production.

Museveni attributed the country’s stability to the rejection of sectarian politics and the consolidation of the NRM, which he said has widened political participation for women, youth and other special interest groups. He argued that inclusion has strengthened national cohesion and provided a foundation for long-term development.

The President highlighted infrastructure development as a major government priority, noting that improved roads have boosted trade and mobility. He recalled that the Masaka–Lyantonde road was in poor condition when the NRM took power in 1986 and assured residents that other key routes would be upgraded.

He said roads linking Mutukula, Sembabule–Mbirizi and Kyabakuza–Kiwanga will be worked on to enhance connectivity and support commerce in the region. However, Museveni cautioned against viewing infrastructure as an end in itself.

“You cannot sleep on roads,” he said, stressing that poverty cannot be defeated by infrastructure alone. He urged families to engage in productive enterprises that generate steady income.

Museveni pointed to government programmes promoting commercial agriculture as practical tools for wealth creation. He said Lwengo District has already benefited from the distribution of more than one million coffee seedlings and 280,000 orange seedlings, aimed at boosting household earnings.

On employment, Museveni said government’s role is to create an enabling environment for business, noting that the private sector is the main source of jobs in developed economies. He cited a farmer from Busoga who abandoned the search for a government job, ventured into commercial farming and now employs over 300 people.

NRM Vice Chairperson for Buganda Region, Haruna Kasolo, praised the government for empowering women and youth, saying the NRM manifesto offers clear opportunities for young people. He commended Lwengo voters for electing NRM-leaning Members of Parliament and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to transforming livelihoods in the district.
