Gov’t Rolls Out Mandatory Vehicle Inspection Across Country

The Ministry of Works and Transport has rolled out mandatory inspection of vehicles starting with government fleet.

A statement issued on Monday, 22nd December, 2025 says the Motor Vehicle Inspection exercise is underway starting with Government fleet and will later roll out to all other vehicle categories on a date to be communicated by the Minister of Works and Transport.

The Ministry says the exercise being undertaken in collaboration with police intends to enhance road safety, protect environment and safeguard the health and wellbeing of the general public.

The key items to be inspected are; braking system, suspension system, lighting system including headlamp aim and beam intensity, exhaust emissions and the general mechanical condition of the vehicle.

The inspection sites are Namanve (All categories of vehicles), Kawanda (All categories), Nabbingo (Motorcycles, motor vehicles and light vehicles), Namulanda (Motorcycles, motor vehicles and light vehicles), Bugema in Mbale City (All categoroies), Layibi in Gulu City (All categories and Kora Norya in Mbarara City, also for all categories.

The inspection fees have significantly been reduced as follows;

Motorcycles and motorized tri-cyles- 5,500.

Car and dual purpose vehicles – Shs52,800,

Passenger vehicles with seating capacity of 8-20 passengers -49,500

Passenger vehicles with seating capacity of 21-60 passengers-55,000

Passenger vehicles with seating capacity of 60 passengers-60,000

Goods vehicles with net weight of less than 3.5 tons – 48,000

Goods vehicles with net weight of 3.5 tons but less than 10 tons -54,000

Goods vehicles with net weight above 10 tons – 60,000

Trailer of 2 axles -30,000

Each extra axle on a trailer-10,000

Agricultural tractors -10,000

Engineering plants with gross weight of less than 3.5 tons -48,000

Engineering plants with gross weight of 3.5 tons but less than ten tons -54,000

Engineering plants with gross weight above 10 tens -60,000
