Police Operation Ends in Fatal Shooting After Family Attacks Officers.
Police in Kitagwenda District are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred during an arrest linked to a domestic violence case in Nyabbani Sub-county. The incident happened on December 28, 2025, at around 9:00 a.m. in Rwenkubebe Parish, Rwenzori West Region, leaving a 59-year-old man dead and a police officer critically injured.
Police reports indicate that the operation followed a domestic violence complaint reported at Nyabbani Police Post on December 27, 2025. Acting on the report, two officers—Corporal Kimanywenda Jocus and Police Constable Tumuhirwe Isa—were assigned to arrest the suspect. The officers, who were armed with an AK-47 rifle, traced the suspect to a bar at Rwenkubebe Trading Centre where he was arrested and placed in handcuffs without resistance.
Police say trouble started when the officers attempted to escort the suspect to a waiting boda boda motorcycle near his home. The suspect allegedly refused to board the motorcycle, and moments later his three sons reportedly arrived armed with hoes and pangas. The group is said to have attacked the officers, turning the arrest into a violent confrontation along the road, about 50 meters from where the suspect had been arrested.
During the attack, one of the sons, identified as Atwebembire Ronald, allegedly cut Corporal Kimanywenda Jocus on the head with a panga, causing serious injuries. As the struggle continued, the suspect reportedly tried to grab the police officer’s gun. In the chaos, gunshots were fired, and the bullets hit the suspect, leading to fatal injuries. The sons allegedly fled the scene after realizing their father had been shot.
Police later responded to the scene with a team comprising homicide detectives, scene-of-crime officers, crime intelligence personnel, and uniformed officers under the command of the Officer in Charge of the station, ASP Nuwamanya Alex. The scene was documented, cartridge shells were recovered, blood was swabbed, and the AK-47 rifle used in the operation was secured as an exhibit.
The body of the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood along the roadside near his home, with multiple gunshot wounds on the chest, hands, thighs, legs, and lower stomach. He was dressed in a white shirt and black trousers and was found lying on his back. The body was later taken to Ntara Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination, while Corporal Kimanywenda remains admitted at the same facility in critical condition.
Police say investigations are still ongoing, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspects who attacked the officers. Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with police as inquiries into the tragic incident continue.
