The Electoral Commission (EC) has disqualified Geoffrey Kayanja, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Nakaseke North MP seat, from the General Parliamentary Election.

The decision was made due to Kayanja’s failure to provide the minimum number of registered voters supporting his nomination, as required by law.

According to the EC statement signed by Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, on December 23, 2025, six out of 10 registered voters supporting Kayanja’s nomination paper did not append their signatures as required.

The EC contends that Kayanja conceded to this during a hearing, leading the EC to conclude that he did not meet the required minimum of ten registered voters in the constituency.

“The Commission, in its meeting of December 23, 2025, under MIN. COMM 093/2025, resolved that Candidate Kayanja Geofrey was not eligible for nomination to contest for the said elective office since he did not comply with the foregoing provision of the law,” the statement reads.

The EC has reversed the decision of the Returning Officer, Nakaseke District, in nominating Kayanja and disqualified him from the General Parliamentary Elections, 2025, for the said elective office.

This disqualification is part of a larger trend of opposition candidates being excluded from the race, with NUP leaders accusing the EC of political bias and manipulation.

Other disqualified candidates among others include;

Mathias Walukagga, NUP candidate for Busiro East, was disqualified due to an expired academic certificate. Walukagga had used a Mature Age/Aptitude Test certificate from Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) that expired on June 12, 2025.

Sarah Kyarimpa, NUP candidate for Isingiro Woman MP, was disqualified after one of her supporters allegedly signed twice on her nomination papers.

Christopher Ategeka, NUP candidate for Buyanja County, was disqualified for allegedly refusing a bribe to step down.

Shalif Ntanda,NUP candidate in Isingiro North, was disqualified after two of his supporters denied endorsing him.

Best Arnold Ankunda,PFF candidate, was informed that one of his seconders denied endorsing him.

Daniel Mulirire,an independent candidate in Budiope East, was disqualified for allegedly failing to attach proof of resignation from public service.

The Electoral Commission (EC) attributes these disqualifications to failure to meet nomination requirements, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) alleges political interference and bias.
