Just In!! Dr Sarah Bireete Charged with Unlawfully Disclosing Voters’ Data, Remanded To Luzira Until 21st Of January 2026
Dr Sarah Bireete, Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG) has been charged with unlawfully obtaining and disclosing national voters’ data without the consent of Uganda’s Electoral Commission. The charges have sparked a wave of controversy, as Bireete is a well-known figure in Uganda’s legal and human rights circles.
As the Director of the Center for Constitutional Governance, Bireete has long been recognized for her work in promoting constitutional reforms and advocating for better electoral practices. However, these new allegations paint a different picture, raising questions about the ethical boundaries of public figures in positions of power. The Electoral Commission, responsible for safeguarding the integrity of Uganda’s elections, has been clear in stating that no individual or organization is permitted to access or distribute voter data without official authorization. Bireete’s alleged breach of this rule is now at the center of a legal investigation, with serious consequences for her career and public reputation.
While some supporters argue that Bireete’s actions may have been motivated by a desire to expose electoral vulnerabilities, others are more concerned about the potential damage to the public trust in the country’s electoral system. The case highlights the delicate balance between public interest advocacy and the importance of protecting confidential data that could influence the democratic process.
As the legal proceedings continue, the public and political observers will be watching closely, not just for the outcome of Bireete’s case, but for the broader implications it could have on data privacy, governance, and the relationship between civil society and government institutions in Uganda.
