Former Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, is gaining momentum in the Nyendo–Mukungwe parliamentary race, with growing indications that his chances of victory have significantly improved as the campaign enters its final phase.

Political observers and local residents say Mpuuga’s rising popularity is driven by his consistent engagement with voters and his ability to articulate issues that directly affect the constituency.

Many now believe he is well placed to defeat his main challengers, including National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Lubowa Gyavira Ssebina and NRM’s Sarah Kiyimba

While Ssebina initially appeared to have an advantage, analysts note that his campaign has recently lost ground. Critics argue that he has struggled to clearly present policy alternatives that resonate with voters, in contrast to Mpuuga’s issue-based approach.

There are also claims within local political circles that financial constraints may be affecting Ssebina’s ability to sustain an expensive campaign, although these claims have not been independently verified.

Mpuuga’s Democratic Front (DF) has also continued to attract defections from other political parties, a development that has strengthened his grassroots structures. The willingness of many residents to rally behind what they describe as “one of their own” has further tilted the political landscape in his favor.

“I personally support Kyagulanyi Robert Sentamu for president, but when it comes to proper representation here, I feel Mpuuga is the best choice compared to Ssebina,” said Ssendagire Musa, a resident of Nyendo.

Another factor working to Mpuuga’s advantage is the apparent shift in focus within NUP ranks. Lawmakers such as Betty Nambooze and Muwanga Kivumbi, who had previously been vocal critics of Mpuuga, are now concentrating on defending their own parliamentary seats as campaigns move into the decisive final lap. This has reduced sustained pressure from NUP camps against the former opposition leader.

As the race tightens, Nyendo–Mukungwe voters appear increasingly attentive to candidates’ records and capacity for effective representation. With momentum seemingly on his side, Mpuuga enters the closing days of the campaign as one of the strongest contenders in what remains a closely watched contest.
