JUST IN: NRM’s Yasini Omari Declared Unopposed for Makindye Division Mayoral Seat
NRM member Yasini Omari has been declared unopposed in the race for Mayor of Makindye Division following the disqualification of all his challengers by the Electoral Commission.
According to the Electoral Commission, a total of eleven candidates who had sought to contest for the position were disqualified after failing to meet nomination requirements.
The commission said investigations revealed that the nomination signatures submitted by the affected candidates were invalid, rendering their bids non-compliant with electoral guidelines.
Those disqualified include candidates affiliated with several political parties, among them the National Unity Platform (NUP), the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), JEEMA, as well as other independent aspirants.
The decision clears the way for Omari to retain the Makindye Division mayoral seat without facing a ballot contest, a development that has sparked mixed reactions among residents and political observers.
While some have welcomed the decision as a strict enforcement of electoral laws, others have raised concerns about the integrity of the nomination process and the broader implications for political competition in the division.
The Electoral Commission has maintained that all candidates were given adequate time and guidance to comply with nomination procedures and emphasized that adherence to electoral laws is mandatory for all aspirants.
Makindye Division is one of Kampala’s key political battlegrounds, and the unopposed victory marks a significant moment in the buildup to the 2026 local government elections.
