Waiswa Mufumbiro in court recently

NUP deputy spokesperson and Nakawa East parliamentary aspirant, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, will miss voting for himself on January 15th general elections after the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court further remanded him until January 22nd.

Mufumbiro has so far spent 78 days on remand without trial, facing charges of incitement to violence, which he denies before the Nakawa Court.

He also faces separate charges in Kawempe Court over alleged participation in prohibited military drills alongside ten others.

On Tuesday, Mufumbiro through his lawyers led by Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa applied to be released on Mandatory Bail arguing that the continued detention violates his constitutional rights to personal liberty and justice.

The prosecution led by Mahatma Odongo opposed his bail application arguing that the police investigations are not yet complete and the that public interest requires that he is denied bail. The same reasons had earlier in December 2025 been relied on by the Court to deny Mufumbiro bail.

However Magistrate Namanya has said he requires time to consider principles governing mandatory bail and as such pushed the decision until January 22nd ,a week after the elections in which Mufumbiro is the NUP flag bearer and is expected to compete with other Candidates from other political parties and independents in the hotly contested Nakawa East Parliamentary Race.

Mufumbiro is also expected to appear in Kawempe Magistrate,s Court sitting in Kanyanya tomorrow Wednesday alongside other ten jailed NUP supporters linked to an alleged military parade staged for NUP Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi’s birthday in February 2025.

The others are: Edward Ssebufu also known as Eddie Mutwe Acleo Kivumbi, Doreen Kaija (Principal of the NUP Leadership School), Saudah Madada (who was absent today), Tasi Calvin (alias Bobi Giant), Edwin Sserunkuma (alias Eddy King Kabejja), Sharif Lukenge, Yasin Nyanzi, Tonny Kaweesi and Olivia Lutaya who was the last to be arrested on this group.

According to the prosecution, on February 12, 2025, at the NUP offices in Makerere–Kavule, Wandegeya, Kawempe Division, the accused persons conducted military drills without the Minister’s permission.

The gathering allegedly involved training participants in military exercises, movements, and evolutions, contrary to Section 45(1)(b) of the Penal Code Act. In a second count, the two are accused of conspiring to commit a felony under Section 363 of the Penal Code Act.
