Police Bust EC Staff, Student With Hundreds of Voter Slips
Police in Mityana have arrested two Electoral Commission (EC) supervisors and a student after recovering hundreds of voter allocation slips and issuance forms under suspicious circumstances.
The suspects are Kazibwe Sande Godfrey, supervisor of Bulera sub-county, Kasana Fred, supervisor for Misebe parish in Bulera sub-county, and Matovu Maiko, a student at Mityana Institute of Nursing and Midwifery.
According to Lameck Kigozi, spokesperson for Wamala Region, the arrests followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen who reported that Matovu had been moving around Kibati township with voter allocation slips and issuance forms on Sunday, 4 January 2026.
“Our team recovered 863 voter allocation slips and 83 issuance forms from the suspect,” Kigozi said.
Following the tip-off, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Mityana, Superintendent of Police Butambika Tyson, coordinated with the district returning officer. They joined a police team led by Juma Godfrey, Incharge Political Desk at Mityana Police Station, to apprehend Matovu. Investigations revealed that he had received the documents from his brother Kazibwe, with the knowledge of Kasana Fred, prompting the arrest of the two EC staff members.
Charges have been preferred against the EC staff for neglect of duty and failure to protect government stores, while Matovu faces a charge of unlawful possession of government stores.
Kigozi warned EC officials to take their duties seriously. “If you are assigned a duty, perform it diligently. We shall not blink an eye or show mercy on anyone who fails to carry out their responsibilities,” he said.
He added :“We thank the members of the public who informed our DPC of this development. Continue reporting irregularities so that we have a peaceful electoral period”.
The arrests are part of ongoing efforts by Mityana Police to ensure electoral integrity, reminding both officials and citizens to adhere strictly to regulations as the country approaches polling day.
