Uganda’s opposition has been shaken by news of fresh abductions involving key members of the National Unity Platform (NUP). According to a statement shared by party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, the party’s Head of Mobilisation, comrade Buwembo Habib, was abducted on Masaka Road this afternoon. He was reportedly taken alongside two other party members, Jamila Wa Bobi and Batabaale Ronald, who is also an electoral candidate. The incident has caused fear, anger, and renewed debate about political freedoms in the country.

The abductions come at a tense time, as political activities increase ahead of upcoming electoral processes. Bobi Wine also revealed that another comrade, Zziwa Robert, was abducted just a day earlier. These cases, he said, are not isolated incidents but part of a growing pattern where opposition members are arrested or disappear without clear explanation. Many of those taken are allegedly being held incommunicado, with families and lawyers unable to reach them.

In his statement, Bobi Wine strongly condemned the arrests, describing them as “cowardly tactics” used to intimidate and silence government critics. He argued that instead of addressing citizens’ concerns through dialogue and democratic competition, authorities are choosing fear and force. According to him, some of those abducted later face what he called trumped-up charges, often linked to security offenses, even when no clear evidence is presented.

Supporters of the opposition say these actions are meant to weaken mobilisation efforts and discourage participation in politics, especially among young people. They argue that when organisers and candidates are targeted, it affects not only political parties but also voters who hope for free and fair elections. Human rights activists have also repeatedly warned that such practices undermine the rule of law and damage Uganda’s international image.

Despite the growing pressure, Bobi Wine insisted that repression has never saved dictators from eventual defeat. He said history shows that intimidation may delay change, but it cannot stop it forever. As families wait anxiously for news of their loved ones, and supporters demand accountability, the latest abductions have once again put Uganda’s political environment under the spotlight, raising serious questions about justice, freedom, and the future of democracy in the country.
