Egypt Shocks Africa Cup: Title Holder Eliminated

The Red Devils could have their hands full with Egypt at the World Cup next summer. The Pharaohs made an impression on Saturday evening at the Africa Cup. After all, they eliminated defending champion Ivory Coast and thus reached the last four.

Egypt owes this impressive performance mainly to an impressive start to the match. After all, they took the lead after just a few minutes. Former Club Brugge defender Kossounou was defeated and Omar Marmoush punished this mercilessly.

Egypt distances itself from Ivory Coast

After just over half an hour it was already 2-0 when defender Rabia headed in on a corner kick. Ivory Coast seemed to be against the ropes, but with a bit of luck they got back into the match five minutes before half-time. Aboul-Fetouh unfortunately worked a sharp free kick into his own goal.

This gave the Elephants hope again, but that was quickly suppressed after the break. After just a few minutes, Salah was able to restore Egypt’s two-goal lead. This made Egypt seem assured of victory.

Semi-final against Senegal

However, in the final quarter it became exciting again. An Ivorian corner stuck in front of goal and Doué was eventually able to put the ball into the net. Ivory Coast then launched a final offensive, but the equalizer never came.

So it is Egypt that can prepare for the semi-finals, in which Senegal will be the opponent. In the other semi-final, the host country Morocco and Nigeria will compete for a final ticket.
