Police Investigate Alleged Voter Bribery Incident in Lira City East Division
SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Police PRO for North Kyoga Region, addressed the case of UPDF Staff Sergeant Too-Dwong Alex.
LIRA CITY – Police in the Lira City East Division are investigating a case of alleged voter bribery following reports of campaign materials being distributed to residents. The situation in the area is now reported as “normal and calm,” according to authorities.
The investigation centers on activities in Adidikgweno, Boke Ward, where it is alleged that items including kitenge (traditional fabric) and hoes were being handed out. A police statement confirmed that inquiries are open regarding the distribution of these materials.
A coordinated police response was swiftly deployed. Crime Intelligence officers and informants were sent to the scene. They were followed by the Divisional Police Commander (DPC) leading a team comprising the Field Force Unit (FFU), General Duties officers, and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
During the operation, several alleged beneficiaries were apprehended in possession of the items. Police recovered five kitenge pieces, which bore the party colours of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and the name of Hon. Amongi Betty Akena, the incumbent woman Member of Parliament for Lira District.
The recovery of the materials reportedly heightened tensions on the ground, nearly sparking a clash between supporters of rival political candidates. Police intervention ensured the situation was contained without violence.
“The recovery of the kitenge nearly led to a breach of peace between supporters of the different candidates,” stated SP P J Okema, the Public Relations Officer for North Kyoga Region, in the official release. He confirmed that “investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided.”
The case highlights ongoing concerns about inducements during electoral processes. The police have urged the public to remain peaceful and allow the legal process to take its course.
