KAMPALA: Uganda’s main opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, said he escaped a security operation at his home in Magere, Wakiso District, after military and police forces raided the premises overnight, cut power and disabled surveillance cameras, as tensions mounted following the announcement of presidential election results.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Kyagulanyi said soldiers and police descended on his residence late at night, switching off electricity and some CCTV cameras while helicopters hovered overhead.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate said he managed to evade arrest and was not at home, though his wife and other family members remained under what he described as house arrest.

“I want to confirm that I managed to escape from them. Currently, I am not at home,” Kyagulanyi said, adding that security forces were “looking for me everywhere” and that he was trying to remain safe.

The opposition leader’s statement came amid a nationwide internet shutdown and heightened security presence in parts of the capital, Kampala, after the Electoral Commission declared President Yoweri Museveni the winner of the presidential vote.

Earlier, the Electoral Commission chairman Simon Byabakama said Museveni, 81, had polled 7,944,772 votes, representing 71.65% of valid ballots cast, while Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform finished second with 2,741,238 votes, or 24.72%.

The commission said voter turnout stood at 52.5%, with more than 11.3 million Ugandans casting ballots.

Kyagulanyi rejected the results as fraudulent, accusing authorities of ballot stuffing, intimidation of polling officials and what he called a “military takeover” of the electoral process.

He condemned the killing of citizens during protests and said Ugandans had a constitutional right to peacefully demonstrate against what he termed “broad daylight thuggery”.

Government and security officials have previously denied accusations of election rigging and rights abuses, saying deployments were necessary to maintain order. Police earlier dismissed reports that Kyagulanyi had been arrested.

The situation remained tense on Sunday, with opposition supporters demanding transparency in the vote tally and international observers urging restraint.

Kyagulanyi said confusion surrounding his whereabouts had spread after neighbours, barred from accessing his home overnight, feared he and his family had been abducted
