The Kawempe North parliamentary race emerged as one of the most dramatic contests in Kampala during the 2026 general elections, culminating in scenes of tension and chaos at the tally centre.

The election, which had already attracted heightened attention due to violent incidents that marred a by-election in the same constituency a few months ago, was the last Kampala contest to be officially declared.

Kampala Region Returning Officer Rashid Hasakya announced the results at the district tally centre set up at Kololo Independence Grounds.

Hasakya declared the incumbent and National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer, Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, as the re-elected Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, defeating National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Faridah Nambi.

According to the official tally, Nalukoola garnered 34,985 votes, while Nambi obtained 8,930.

However, as the Returning Officer read out the results, tensions escalated when Nambi’s supporters rejected the outcome and confronted election officials.

Security personnel intervened and whisked Hasakya away for his safety as the situation grew increasingly volatile. In the process, the Returning Officer fled with Nalukoola’s Declaration of Results (DR) forms.

Reacting to the incident, Nalukoola accused Nambi and her team of attempting to overturn his victory, saying he had overwhelmingly defeated her across the constituency.

“I defeated Nambi thoroughly. She never defeated me anywhere. No single polling station did Nambi get anything beyond the magnitude of 100 votes. I won her decisively,” Nalukoola said.

He added:

“She has failed completely, but I have seen her attacking the returning officer. Why?”

The Kawempe North race attracted five candidates. Other contestants included Edward Stanley Engenamaitum (Independent), who polled 114 votes; Ismail Musitwa (FDC) with 100 votes; and Salim Sserunkuma (Independent), who garnered 131 votes.
