Unlike previous general elections where the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) swept all the Members of Parliament seats in the capital Kampala, the 2026 polls turned out different.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) pulled off a significant performance that few anticipated, winning 3 of the 10 MP slots in Kampala.

The Minister for Kampala, Minsa Kabanda defeated NUP Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya to win the Kampala Central MP seat.

In Kawempe South, Madina Nsereko defeated NUP president Bobi Wine’s brother, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu.

In Nakawa East, former Deputy Attorney General, Fred Ruhindi defeated jailed NUP deputy spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro.

However, the rest of the seats were swept by the NUP.

In Nakawa West, the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi retained his seat, defeating eight other candidates who contested against him.

Ssenyonyi polled 21,765 votes. He was followed by NRM’s Anderson Burora who garnered 9,586 votes.

Ivan Bwowe of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) polled 271 votes; Wilberforce Kyambadde of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) garnered 396 votes; Happy Nsasira of the Democratic Front – 301 votes; Norbert Vincent Okumu of Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) – 198 votes; Felix Okuye – 404 votes while Rwamiti Apuuli of the Common Man’s Party garnered 342 votes.

“Accordingly, as Returning Officer for Kampala electoral district and in accordance with section 77(1) of the parliamentary elections act cap 177, declare Ssenyonyi Joel Besekezi who has obtained the largest number of votes to be the elected candidate for Nakawa Division West constituency,” said Returning Officer, Rashid Hasakya as he declared Joel Ssenyonyi.

Although he was declared winner, Ssenyonyi claimed that in Nakawa West, his colleague Waiswa Mufumbiro was cheated.

In Kawempe North, the incumbent, Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi defeated NRM’s Faridah Nambi.

In Rubaga, the Electoral Commission declared the incumbent, Abubakar Kawalya and KCCA speaker, Zahara Luyirika as winners.

The Commission also declared Shamim Malende as Kampala Woman MP.

President Museveni has previously attributed poor service delivery in Kampala to opposition MPs, saying that the electorate vote for people that don’t access him to lobby for their constituencies.

It remains to be seen if the quality of services in the city will improve.
