There’s been a spring in the step of everyone connected to Manchester United this week. Having feared the worst heading into Saturday’s derby against Manchester City, a stellar performance from the Red Devils saw United thump their rivals on an afternoon to remember at Old Trafford.

After the dismay of the Ruben Amroim era, the result has sparked a renewed sense of optimism among the United faithful, whose attention is now firmly focused on qualifying for the Champions League. Should interim Michael Carrick manage to guide United back into the top four (or perhaps even top five, depending on how the coefficient plays out), there has been some talk of handing the ex-England international the job on a full-time basis.

There’s plenty for the United hierarchy to figure out between now and then, but one thing they could be looking to do is secure the signature of one of the Premier League’s most underrated players. What’s more, should they play their cards right, the record English champions won’t even need to spend a penny on transfer fees, given the player in question is approaching the end of his contract. Whether Everton have an option for an extra year remains to be seen, but according to the Toffees website, his deal is set to expire in the summer.

James Garner came through the academy at United and following a couple of loan spells, he joined Everton permanently in 2022. Since then, the midfield general has gone from strength to strength, with manager David Moyes recently tipping him for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

The upside for United is that Garner is only 24 years old and has plenty room for improvement. On top of that, whoever is in charge next season is likely to need more than one midfield addition, given the current state of United’s squad.

Carlos Baleba has been touted as the most likely signing, as United look to replace Casemiro, who is currently heading for the exit door himself. Brighton are unlikely to let him go on the cheap, meaning Garner could represent a cost-effective option to help bolster their ranks.

According to stats provided by FBRef, Garner averages around three tackles per 90 minutes, and is also responsible for two clearances each matches. While he might not slide straight into the United starting XI, Garner is a utility option, who could help share the load, especially if United find a route back into Europe.
