Police Officer Killed, Body Found Lying In A Pool Of Blood Inside A Suspect’s House
Police in Greater Bushenyi are investigating a shocking murder in which a police officer was brutally killed during an early morning operation in Buhweju District. The incident happened on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Kyanika B Village in Nyakaziba Town Council.
According to police reports, the deceased officer has been identified as No. 63418 PC Opiro Sunday, a 34-year-old police officer attached to Nyakaziba Police Station. He was killed while on official duty, attempting to arrest a suspect accused of threatening violence.
The operation began at around 6:09 a.m. when PC Opiro Sunday and No. 52718 CPL Olenge Christopher booked out from Nyakaziba Police Station to arrest one Tumusiime Wilbroad. The suspect was wanted in connection with a case of threatening violence previously reported at the same police station. The officers were guided by the LC1 Chairman of Kyanika B Village and the complainant, identified as Mubangizi Josephat.
Upon reaching the suspect’s home, the LC1 chairman identified the police officers and clearly explained the reason for their visit. However, the suspect refused to respond and remained silent inside the house. Instead, children inside the house told the officers that the door would not be opened.
PC Opiro, who was armed, attempted to look through one of the windows. It is alleged that the suspect suddenly grabbed the muzzle of the gun from inside the house and pulled it. In the process, PC Opiro entered the house through the window while holding the firearm, as CPL Olenge tried unsuccessfully to force open the door.
Moments later, a gunshot was heard from inside the house. PC Opiro was then heard shouting for help, saying the suspect had cut his hand. Shortly after, he raised another alarm stating that he had been cut on the head and was being killed. CPL Olenge failed to access the house and immediately ran back to Nyakaziba Police Station to seek reinforcement.
Police officers quickly mobilized and returned to the scene. By the time they arrived, the suspect had opened the house and fled. At the scene, officers recovered a magazine and a mobile phone belonging to the deceased officer. PC Opiro Sunday was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood, with multiple deep cuts on his head, hands, and legs.
Efforts were made to rush the injured officer to hospital, but he sadly died on the way due to the severity of the injuries.
Police have since registered a case of murder by hacking and aggravated robbery. Investigations are ongoing, and a hunt for the suspect has been launched as authorities vow to bring the perpetrator to justice.
