U.S. Senators @SenatorShaheen and @CoryBooker are calling for the immediate release of opposition leader Dr. @kizzabesigye1 following Uganda’s January 15, 2026 elections, which they described as another serious setback for democracy in the country. In a joint statement, the American lawmakers said the election period was filled with fear, restrictions, and actions that weakened democratic principles.

The senators expressed deep concern about reports of attacks on journalists who were covering political events. They also pointed to the arrest and harassment of opposition politicians and supporters. According to them, such actions create an environment where people are afraid to speak freely or take part in politics, which is not healthy for any democracy.

Another major issue raised was the violence allegedly carried out by security forces. The senators said force was used against civilians in different areas during the election period. They noted that when security agencies are seen targeting citizens instead of protecting them, public trust in the system continues to fall.

The lawmakers also criticized the last-minute nationwide internet shutdown. They said blocking the internet limited communication, stopped the flow of information, and made it hard for citizens, journalists, and observers to follow what was happening during a very important national event. They described the shutdown as a serious restriction on freedom of expression.

In their statement, Senators Shaheen and Booker also raised alarm over threats reportedly made by Uganda’s Defense Minister, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, against opposition leaders, including @HEBobiwine. They said such threats increase political tension and can create fear among citizens and political actors.

Because of these concerns, the two senators urged the Trump administration to review U.S. security assistance to Uganda. They said the United States should ensure that its support does not benefit individuals or institutions accused of undermining democratic rights. They also called for accountability for those responsible for abuses.

Their message adds to growing international attention on Uganda’s political situation. The senators emphasized that respect for human rights, political freedom, and the rule of law are essential for stability and true democracy.
