NUP's western coordinator charged with rash driving after weeks missing
Bright Muhumuza, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Coordinator for Ankole sub-region, has been charged with doing a rash and negligent act.
The charge comes weeks after Muhumuza went missing just before the January 15 presidential elections.
For three weeks, his family had no knowledge of his whereabouts amid reports he had been abducted and held incommunicado.
According to a charge sheet filed at Rwizi Region, Muhumuza allegedly drove a Toyota Prado (Reg. No. UAY) on November 8, 2025, along Kyamugolanyi Road near Rad Motel in Mbarara City.
Police say he drove “so rash or negligent likely to cause harm” to SP Kenneth Kabwigo Gumisiriza. The charge was preferred by D/SSP Karugaba Collins Keith under Section 211(a) of the Penal Code Act.
On Thursday, NUP General Secretary Lewis Rubongoya said Muhumuza was violently abducted and only appeared in court in Mbarara today.
"Our comrade Bright Muhumuza produced before court in Mbarara three weeks since he was abducted and held incommunicado. Bright was violently abducted on 14th January," Rubongoya said.
He added, "Since then, we've looked him in vain. They're charging him with doing a rash and negligent act."
Muhumuza’s disappearance came on the eve of the elections.
Since then, several NUP supporters in the region have reportedly gone missing, raising fears over the safety of opposition members in the post-election period.
NUP says more than 3,000 of its supporters remain missing since the election period.
