Police Vehicle Overturns in Murchison Park, Recruits Injured
Police in Nwoya District are investigating a single serious road accident that occurred on 10th February 2026 at around 10:40 a.m. The accident happened inside Murchison Park along the Karuma–Pakwach highway. The vehicle involved was an Isuzu Elf, blue in colour, registration number UP 00296, which was carrying police recruits.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was transporting 49 police recruits and one trainer. The group was travelling from Manafwa Police Station, where they had been on attachment during the election period. They were heading back to Ikafe Police Training School in Yumbe District to resume their initial training when the accident occurred.
The driver of the vehicle was Sgt Barwa George, a 59-year-old police driver attached to the Police Mechanical Workshop in Kampala. In his statement, he reported that the vehicle developed a mechanical problem while on the highway. As a result, the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.
Several recruits sustained injuries in the accident. About 15 recruits were seriously injured and were rushed to Anaka Main Hospital by good Samaritans who arrived at the scene to help. Other recruits who remained at the scene were later picked up by an ambulance and also taken to Anaka Hospital for medical attention.
All the victims were recruits from Ikafe Police Training School in Yumbe District. They include both male and female recruits from different tribes and regions of the country. Police confirmed that no deaths were reported at the time, but many of the injured recruits were receiving treatment for various injuries.
Police officers from Nwoya Police Station responded quickly to the incident. The scene was visited by the District Police Commander, SP Niwagaba Ivan, together with the District Traffic Officer, ASP Ogwal Khasule, and other traffic officers. Photographs were taken and a sketch plan of the scene was drawn to support investigations.
The damaged vehicle remained at the scene as arrangements were being made to remove it using a breakdown truck. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are still ongoing, with police focusing on the alleged mechanical failure and the general condition of the vehicle.
Police have assured the public that a full report will be compiled and appropriate action will be taken after investigations are completed. They also reminded all drivers, especially those transporting many passengers, to ensure vehicles are mechanically sound before long journeys to avoid such accidents.
