95 arrested as police intensify operations in Kira, Wakiso district
WAKISO – The Uganda Police Force, working jointly with sister security agencies and local leaders, has intensified disruptive operations across Kira Municipality and neighbouring areas in Wakiso District to curb rising criminal activity and respond to public concerns over insecurity.
The operations, which targeted known crime and drug abuse hotspots, were conducted on different dates in February 2026 and led to the arrest of dozens of suspects believed to be involved in narcotics-related crime and street robbery.
On February 3, 2026, security teams carried out an operation in Kireka Railway, Kamuli, Kyaliwajjala Market, and Naalya areas under Namugongo Division in Kira Municipality. A total of 62 suspects were arrested during the operation, and exhibits of suspected opium were recovered. Following a joint screening process, 39 suspects were formally charged and arraigned in court on February 5, 2026 for offences related to possession of narcotic substances.
Another disruptive operation was conducted on February 4, 2026, in the areas of Kulambiro–Kyanja, Tubba, and the Kisaasi sector under the Kira Road policing area. The operation targeted individuals who allegedly smoke opium in hideouts before engaging in criminal acts such as snatching bags and mobile phones, and waylaying members of the public at night. Nineteen suspects were arrested with exhibits and are currently detained at Kira Road Police Division, pending fingerprinting, further screening, and court appearance.
On February 9, 2026, an intelligence-led joint operation was launched in Mulawa and Nsasa areas of Kira Municipality following an upsurge in criminal activity. Fourteen suspects were arrested from makeshift structures, where quantities of suspected narcotic substances were recovered. The suspects are being held at Kira Police Station as their case files are processed for possible prosecution.
In total, 95 suspects have been arrested during the recent operations, with a significant number already presented before court. Police say the operations are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal gangs, curb drug abuse, and reduce street crime in urban neighbourhoods.
The Uganda Police Force has commended residents for their cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to sustained, intelligence-led operations aimed at improving public safety and maintaining peace in the affected communities.
Police have also appealed to the public to continue sharing timely information on criminal behaviour, suspicious individuals, and emerging hotspots with the nearest police stations, area commanders, or through dedicated hotlines.
