The newly elected Mbale City Woman MP, Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, has officially declared her intention to contest for the position of Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

She made the declaration today, Friday, 20th February, 2026 during a press conference held at House 49 in Malukhu, Mbale Industrial City Division.

Declaring her intention, Lydia Wanyoto cited the historical importance of the venue of declaration saying the house belongs to the late Maumbe Mukhwana who hosted President Museveni in 1973 where he was almost killed by Iddi Amin soldiers.

“You asked me to stand here at House 49Bugisu has a big contribution to the NRM revolution led by President Museveni. He was here in 22nd January, 1973 where he was almost killed with his colleagues, one was called Mwesigye and Kazi Moto. So this is historical,” Wanyoto argued.

Wanyoto says her decision to contest for the coveted office follows the endorsement by her voters who have asked her to contest.

She promises to start her campaign with the Mbale City Members of Parliament, then the Bugisu Sub Region 25 MPs and follow up with the rest of the MPs countrywide.

This decision, is not surprising with many Mbale City voters arguing that Lydia Wanyoto has consistently been fought to fail to go to Parliament because there are forces who fear her potential to lead the August House.

The recent overwhelming victory against the incumbent, Connie Galiwango was largely premised on the voters wish to see one of their own lead one of the three Arms of Government.

Bugisu is seen to have been marginalized in the sharing of the National Cake since the passing away of James Wapakhabulo who was once a Speaker of Parliament.
