The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, has been charged with murder, adding to the list of offences he faces before the Kanyanya Magistrates Court.
Mufumbiro, who is among dozens of NUP members and supporters currently on remand over allegations of conducting illegal military drills, appeared in court on Friday when prosecutors introduced the fresh charge.
Reading the charge sheet, the Chief Magistrate stated that the offence allegedly occurred on September 4, 2025, at the NUP offices in Makerere Kavule, Kampala District.
“The particulars of the offence are that on the 4th day of September 2025 or thereabout, at the National Unity Platform offices in Makerere Kavule, you requested persons to commit an offence against Ugandan security personnel,” the Magistrate said.
The murder charge was not included in the original charge sheet when Mufumbiro was first arraigned in court. Its introduction comes amid revelations that he did not personally participate in the military-style drills for which he was initially arrested.
The drills in question relate to a parade conducted by NUP supporters on February 12, 2025, at the party’s headquarters to mark the birthday of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
Prosecution alleges that the parade amounted to an illegal military drill conducted without authorization from the Minister of Internal Affairs, contrary to the law.
Following the incident, several NUP members and supporters were arrested and charged.
