Six people have died in a devastating road crash that occurred at daybreak in Kyakabuga Village, Kyankwanzi District, after a passenger bus and a cargo truck collided head-on along the Kiboga–Hoima Highway.

The accident involved a bus, registration number UBQ 595G, which was travelling from Kampala to Hoima, and a Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UBF 541C, transporting charcoal from Hoima. The impact triggered a massive fire that engulfed both vehicles, reducing them to twisted, charred wreckage.

Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi confirmed that six people died instantly at the scene. The deceased include two occupants of the bus and four individuals who were travelling in the truck.

Seven other victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kikonda Health Centre III for emergency medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the mortuary at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital pending identification and postmortem examinations.

Police identified two of the deceased as Muhumuza Gerald, 40, the bus driver and a resident of Hoima West Division, and Linongola Matsukizo, 47, a Congolese national engaged in business activities. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to establish the identities of the four other victims who had been travelling in the truck.

Emergency responders from Kyankwanzi and Hoima districts, supported by a fire brigade unit from Hoima, battled the blaze and secured the scene. Despite their efforts, both vehicles were completely destroyed.

The wreckage remained by the roadside as towing arrangements were being made, partially blocking the highway and causing traffic disruptions. Motorists have been advised to approach the area with caution.

Preliminary police findings indicate that overspeeding and reckless driving may have caused the fatal collision. Authorities have renewed calls for motorists to observe speed limits and adhere to road safety regulations, particularly on major highways with heavy traffic flow.
