Security Guard Shoots Self Dead at Fort Portal Bank
A security guard in Fort Portal allegedly shot himself dead while on duty last evening.
The guard has been identified as Robert Tumusiime, a security guard attached to Pinnacle Security Limited, who had reported for his evening shift at the Bank of Africa Fort Portal Branch.
The guard had reported for the evening shift and went to change into his uniform in one of the nearby rooms, where he later shot himself in the forehead.
A colleague indicated that the incident could have been linked to personal or family challenges.
An eyewitness, Mohammed Katusabe, says the incident happened at around 6:20 pm when he heard a gunshot in the room next to where he was. He added that the deceased had earlier left his phone with a workmate and instructed him to inform callers that he was not around.
Another security guard in Fort Portal, Jamal Hakim, said private guards face numerous challenges that sometimes overwhelm them, emphasizing the need for guidance and counseling services. He urged security companies to create platforms where guards can be listened to and supported, ensure timely payment of salaries, and provide counseling services. He also advised fellow guards to avoid excessive use of drugs such as alcohol and opium.
Police arrived at the scene and took the body of the deceased to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
The incident comes just weeks after another security guard attached to GT Security Experts in Fort Portal went on a shooting rampage and shot a police officer before he was later put out of action.
