Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Military Police, in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, have clarified the purpose of the snap checkpoints mounted across Kampala this week.

The operation, which began on Monday, 9 March 2026, targets road safety and law enforcement. Authorities say it aims to restore order on the roads, enforce traffic regulations, impound unregistered or numberless vehicles, and curb the illegal use of sirens. Checkpoints have been set up on major routes, including Jinja Road, Entebbe Road, Masaka Road, and Gayaza Road.

Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs, emphasized that the operation is not political.

“The checkpoints are about road safety and law enforcement. They are not aimed at any individual, including NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu,” Colonel Magezi said.

By the way, Bobi Wine continues to remain out of public view, despite some rumors linking the road operations to him. Officials insist there is no connection.

Motorists have been urged to cooperate with authorities. Colonel Magezi added:

“We ask all drivers and motorcyclists to observe the rules and follow directions at checkpoints. This is for everyone’s safety and the common good.”

The enforcement measures, authorities say, are routine and have been employed in the past to improve road discipline and reduce traffic-related crime.

The operation will continue as long as necessary, with the focus squarely on public safety and compliance with traffic laws.
