Chairman Parliamentary SACCO provides update on Hon. Ssegirinya’s savings

Hon. Robert Migadde Ndugwa, the chairperson of the Uganda Parliamentary SACCO, has provided an update regarding the savings and financial contributions made following the death of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya.

Speaking an interview on Spark TV, Migadde explained that the Parliamentary SACCO brings together current Members of Parliament, former MPs, as well as staff and former staff of Parliament, and that the late Ssegirinya was an active member with personal savings in the cooperative.

Migadde revealed that after Ssegirinya’s passing, Parliament passed a motion encouraging members to contribute toward supporting his family.

Each MP reportedly contributed Shs 300,000, raising close to Shs 160 million intended to assist the late legislator’s relatives.

However, the money has not yet been released to the family.

According to Migadde, the funds were temporarily placed under the custody of the Parliamentary SACCO because no officially recognized beneficiary or administrator had been presented.

When he breathed his last, Parliament passed a motion where each member contributed Shs 300,000. The money amounted to almost Shs 160 million meant for his family. But since no rightful person was presented to receive it, the funds were kept with the Parliamentary SACCO.

It wouldn’t be proper to leave it on Parliament’s account because when the financial year ends, such money returns to the national budget.

He added that the SACCO is still holding the funds safely, not because they doubt Ssegirinya’s passing, but because no legally recognized representative of the family has been identified to receive the money.

Migadde further noted that the situation has been complicated by uncertainty surrounding the late MP’s marital status, as it has not been clearly established who his legally recognized spouse is.

As a result, the family is expected to appoint an official administrator of the estate, after which the money will be formally handed over.
