Fort Portal: It’s sad news but we have no choice but to say it as it is. Tooro Kingdom Crown Prince David Kiijanangoma Araali is critically ill, battling stage three throat cancer, a disease that has reportedly been silently eating him away since last year.

Highly placed sources close to the royal family have confirmed to TheSpy Uganda that the prince, commonly known among friends as Prince Kiija, has been undergoing medical examinations and treatment in Kampala while quietly fighting the deadly illness.

Medical reports from Nakasero Hospital, Kampala Hospital, Mulago Cancer Institute and Kampala Imaging Center reportedly indicate that the prince is suffering from esophageal (throat) cancer, with doctors recommending urgent specialized treatment abroad.

Radiology analysis conducted by Quest Teleradiology suggests the disease has advanced and may have affected surrounding lymph nodes and the lungs, making the situation more critical and requiring advanced oncology care.

According to family sources on condition of anonymity, doctors have advised that the prince seeks better treatment in India or at Aga Khan University Hospital, one of the region’s leading cancer treatment facilities.

However, the biggest hurdle now is finances.

Give Me Second Chance To Live Please: Prince Kiija Appeals For Help From Friends And Tooro Community

Speaking to confidant and close friend, Andrew Irumba Katusabe, the CEO at TheSpy Uganda, the prince revealed that the illness has drained nearly all the resources he and his family had saved.

“I have drained all the little that I had saved together with my family. I believe government, President Museveni and good Samaritans of Uganda can give me a second chance to live,” Kiija told our Spy.

Family members say they are currently working on securing referral from Uganda’s medical board to determine the exact hospital and treatment plan abroad.

Preliminary estimates suggest that about Shs500 million may be required to cater for treatment, travel, accommodation and other medical expenses. But wven here locally for now, the prince needs our help for several chemotherapies he does at Mulago and Nakasero hospitals, and other related medical bills.

Who Is Prince David Kiijanangoma?

Prince Kiijanangoma is a grandson of the late George David Kamurasi Rukidi III, one of the most respected monarchs in the history of Tooro Kingdom.

The prince has in the past been a controversial but outspoken royal figure.

In March 2015, he made headlines after attempting to dethrone his cousin, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, accusing the monarch of abandoning active leadership of the kingdom while living a comfortable life in Kampala.

The move attracted both criticism and support among the Batooro. Some of his supporters even reportedly established an alternative palace for him at one of his grandfather’s old palaces along Bwamba Road in Fort Portal, signaling an attempt to rally a parallel royal structure. They even organized parallel coronation ceremony in which they attempted to install him as a parallel king but plans were thwarted by Oyo’s ‘Omujwara Kondo’, President Yoweri Museveni, who deployed heavily and dispersed the crowds. Kiija was arrested and jailed in Katojo prisons but later released. President Museveni later enabled negotiations and harmonization meetings through his then powerful minister Brig. Henry Tumukunde, who was also a personal friend to Kiija.

Although the move never resulted in a formal change in the kingdom’s leadership, it cemented Kiijanangoma’s reputation as one of the most outspoken princes in Tooro’s modern history.

Family Appeals To Well Wishers

Today, however, the prince’s fight is now a battle for survival. His family has now appealed to well-wishers, friends of Tooro, the Tooro community, in-laws of the kingdom and government to support the prince’s treatment.
