The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) and the Attorney General’s Chambers have received the greenlight to kick-off the process of extraditing a National Unity Platform (NUP) grassroot mobilizer (foot soldier) who is on the run over treachery charges.

Mengo based Mwanga Two Chief Magistrate Court issued the directive after Criminal Summons and warrant of arrest were issued against a one Rogers Businge which he intentionally declined to honour.

According to court documents, prosecution alleges that Businge was among the suspects who are supposed to face the said criminal charges but efforts by the State to apprehended him didn’t yield results because he sneaked out of the country.

In November 2025, Court issued an arrest warrant against him but it was not executed. This led to other accused person’s lawyers to plead with the trial magistrate to struck Businge off the charge sheet so that their clients get a speedy trial.

The magistrate disagreed with the defence lawyers insisting that within the law, there are mechanisms which can be used to apprehend a suspect even if he is out of the country which the prosecution agreed with.

Prosecution confirmed to court that all State mechanisms have been deployed to make sure that the said accused person is brought to court to physically answer to the criminal charges.

The development comes at a time when a number of NUP mobilizers in United States are scared of being deported back to Uganda on grounds of having criminal records back home while others lack proper documents to stay in the said country.

According to the charge sheet, Businge is charged with treachery together with Thomas Wamala, Umar Bukenya, Edrisa Sebalamu, Umar Lukwago and Julius Makoba .

Apart from Businge, other accused persons were arrested, charged and remanded to Luzira Prison after prosecution alleged that they were attempting to mobilise people to overthrow a legally elected government.

They were charged under Section 23 of the Penal Code Act.
