High ICU Costs Spark Concern Over Patient Protection

When asked about intensive care unit (ICU) charges at Kawempe Hospital, Dr. Byaruhanga revealed that patients are charged UGX 1 million per week. However, most patients typically stay in the ICU for only three days. The high cost has raised concerns about affordability and protection for patients, prompting calls for government oversight.

Gorreth Namugga, Vice Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, said there is a need to regulate private hospital charges. “We know we operate a free market economy, but it is also in the interest of the Government to regulate the private sector,” she said. Namugga highlighted that some private hospital beds cost up to UGX 2.5 million per day, an amount most people cannot afford.

She emphasized that while private hospitals are businesses, there should be safeguards to prevent extortion and protect Ugandans from exorbitant fees. “Somebody fails to pay, and the other side suffers. There must be rules to ensure people are not exploited,” Namugga added. The discussion reflects ongoing concerns about balancing free-market operations with the protection of patients in Uganda’s healthcare system.
