Senior Police Officer Arrested Over Reckless Driving
A dramatic incident unfolded along the busy Kampala–Masaka highway in Wakiso District when a senior police officer was arrested following reckless driving and a confrontation with fellow traffic officers. The घटना happened on March 22, 2026, at Kitemu near the popular Mars Bar area, a place known for heavy traffic, especially during school visitation days.
According to reports, SP Muhangi Adam, a 40-year-old officer attached to the Forensic Department at Police Headquarters, was driving a grey Toyota Premio (registration number UAN 289W) from Masaka towards Kampala. Due to the heavy traffic jam on the road, he allegedly began overtaking other vehicles using the wrong lane, which is meant for oncoming traffic. His actions created a dangerous situation for both motorists and pedestrians.
As he continued driving recklessly, he nearly collided with an oncoming Toyota Hiace whose driver refused to give way. In an attempt to avoid a crash, SP Muhangi suddenly swerved back into his lane, almost knocking down a traffic officer, PC Oruk Denis, who was controlling traffic in the middle of the road. The near-miss caught the attention of another officer, Corporal Uvoya Yohana, who was also managing traffic at the Kitemu junction.
Cpl Uvoya quickly signaled the driver to stop. However, instead of cooperating, the driver reportedly rolled up his windows and locked himself inside the vehicle, attempting to drive away through Kisozi Road. Acting swiftly, Cpl Uvoya removed the vehicle’s front number plate to prevent him from escaping. This led to further tension as the driver later stepped out and demanded its return, but was denied.
The situation escalated when the driver’s wife got involved. She reportedly forcefully grabbed the number plate from the officer during a scuffle and fled with it. Meanwhile, another officer, PC Buto Anthony, joined his colleagues in trying to arrest the driver. However, SP Muhangi resisted arrest and allegedly pushed Cpl Uvoya, nearly knocking him to the ground.
Despite the chaos, the situation was later brought under control after the District Police Commander (DPC) Nsangi, SP Chebene Rogers, was alerted and arrived at the scene. Additional officers from Nsangi Police Station also responded to support the operation. The driver was eventually taken into custody and transported to Nsangi Police Station.
At the station, SP Muhangi Adam was formally charged with careless driving and assault under the relevant traffic and criminal references. His statement was recorded, and he was later detained as investigations into the incident continue.
Police authorities have confirmed that inquiries are ongoing and have emphasized the importance of discipline and adherence to traffic laws, regardless of one’s position. The incident serves as a reminder that reckless behavior on the road can lead to serious consequences, even for those entrusted with enforcing the law.
