Multidimensional poverty is a comprehensive approach that measures poverty beyond just income, capturing deprivations in health, education, and living standards simultaneously. It reveals who is poor and how they are poor—such as lacking clean water, nutrition, or schooling—providing a more accurate picture than monetary metrics alone.
Commonly measured using the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), it includes indicators like child mortality, nutrition, years of schooling, school attendance, cooking fuel, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, housing, and assets.
A person is considered multidimensionally poor if they are deprived in a significant portion of these indicators.
Beyond Income: It highlights that a person may not be financially poor, yet still experience acute deprivation in essential services.
This approach allows governments to identify specific sectors needing intervention to reduce poverty, such as improving infrastructure (electricity, water) or increasing access to health services.
