The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has officially closed its case in the long-running murder trial of Joan Kagezi, marking an important moment in the search for justice. After presenting evidence from 26 witnesses, the prosecution told the court it had completed its side of the case. This step brings the trial closer to a crucial decision that many people have been waiting for over a decade.

Following the closure of the prosecution’s case, the court outlined the next steps. The defence team has been asked to file written submissions arguing whether their clients have a case to answer. These submissions must be submitted and shared with the prosecution by April 17, 2026. In response, the prosecution will file its reply by May 18, 2026, while the defence will give its final rejoinder by June 1, 2026. After reviewing all arguments, the court is expected to deliver its ruling on July 3, 2026. This ruling will determine whether the accused will be required to defend themselves or be set free.

Joan Kagezi was a respected Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions who headed the International Crimes Department. She was widely known for her dedication and courage in handling complex and sensitive cases. Her life was tragically cut short on March 30, 2015, when she was brutally assassinated in Kampala. Her death shocked the nation and raised serious concerns about the safety of legal professionals working on high-profile cases.

At the time of her assassination, Kagezi was leading the prosecution in the 2010 Kyadondo bomb blast case, one of the most serious terrorism cases in Uganda’s history. The case involved attacks that claimed many lives and left deep scars on the country. Her role in prosecuting such a sensitive case made her a key figure in the justice system and may have put her at risk.

As the trial moves into its next phase, many Ugandans continue to follow the proceedings closely. For the family, friends, and colleagues of Joan Kagezi, the hope is that the truth will finally come out and justice will be served. The upcoming court ruling in July will be a major moment, as it will shape the direction of the case and bring the country one step closer to closure.
